Using Technology to
Improve the Editing Process
Webinar for Law Review Editors
National Conference for Law Review Editors - April 7, 2024
Law review is an honor, a privilege, and a highly coveted credential, but checking superficial details often detracts from substantive work—it can even get in the way of your classwork. So how can you balance managing the details of publishing a flawless journal issue while building your own writing and analytical skills? The answer is technology. Learn to look for the reasoning behind the rules you so can remember them and carefully apply them, then find ways for technology to reinforce the substance of your classroom learning so you can apply it to your journal work while preparing for your career.
In this webinar, we’ll discuss some basic free tools built into Microsoft Word like the Table of Contents, Styles, Table of Authorities, and Navigation Pane, Track Changes and some add-ins like WordRake and PerfectIt to help you improve your law review process, and quality of work, while you also develop transferrable skills to bring into your first year of practice. We’ll share in-depth and quick-fix substantive resources to help you get through the work you must do now and grow your skills for the future.
- We’ll start with a fast-paced Ignite-style presentation where Ivy will share Microsoft Word tips and tricks to help you make the program work for you. Discover small but high-impact adjustments you can make to your default settings and clever ways to use find-and-replace to check your documents faster.
- Then we’ll dive into developing skills like using Microsoft Word’s Table of Contents, Styles, Track Changes, Table of Authorities, and Navigation Pane to reinforce substantive legal writing concepts such as information hierarchy and design, weight of authority, and persuasive audience-focused writing.
- We’ll end with three add-ins that can help you work faster: PerfectIt for Bluebook citation formatting, WordRake for clear and concise editing, and Lexis for Microsoft Office for managing your research folders.
