Our best writing tip? Edit for clarity and brevity with WordRake. It’s an automated in-line editor that checks for needless words, cumbersome phrases, clichés, and more.
I just finished our 52nd Writing Tip. (And, yes, I write every one myself.)
On behalf of all of us at WordRake, I thank all of you in the thousands of firms, universities, and government agencies now editing with WordRake software. Thank you, too, to those who have emailed, called, or approached us at conventions and conferences to encourage us to “keep sending the Tips.” In May, one of you even posted to us a real letter (paper, stamp, the whole shebang). Elegant touch. My favorite sentence: “Your awareness of the writing errors I commit and that others around me commit is so complete it’s almost creepy.”
“Joe D.” added, “Your insights about writing are so good that I wonder why you give them away for free.” It’s because after 25 years of teaching lawyers how to improve their writing, I’m happy to know I can still help those who labor in the most difficult profession in the world. And that’s no lie.
The Tips are free; I just ask that you try our WordRake editing software. One whole year of having that dispassionate editor we all need costs you about 20 minutes of your billable time, so it’s almost free.
If you’re already using our software, let us know what you think. If you’re not using it, try it out at wordrake.com.
WordRake is editing software designed by writing expert and New York Times bestselling author Gary Kinder. Like an editor or helpful colleague, WordRake ripples through your document checking for needless words and cumbersome phrases. Its complex algorithms find and improve weak lead-ins, confusing language, and high-level grammar and usage slips.
WordRake runs in Microsoft Word and Outlook, and its suggestions appear in the familiar track-changes style. If you’ve used track changes, you already know how to use WordRake. There’s nothing to learn and nothing to interpret. Editing for clarity and brevity has never been easier.
